September 8 - September 28 2004

The third ECOHAB Pacific Northwest cruise took place in September 2004 aboard the R/V Atlantis. The Atlantis left Seattle at 10:00 AM PDT September 8 and returned to Seattle at 10:00 AM September 28. The chief scientist was Barbara Hickey.

The ECOHAB 3 cruise was highly successful: Pseudo-nitzschia (PN) blooms of unprecedented high densities and toxicities in the region persisted throughout the cruise. This situation provides an important contrast to the 2003 cruises, in which PN were present, but never a dominant species of the phytoplankton assemblage. The longevity and toxicity of the blooms as well as their large spatial extent provided a rare opportunity for studying toxic blooms in situ.   Mixed Pseudo-nitzschia spp.
